Bakehouse Tribute

Sunday 14th May 2023

Bakehouse in York made their own memorial for Long Boi which involved a donut stating “RIP,” with a photo of the mallard on the donut. The 2ft 4in mallard Indian runner cross, Long Boi was presumed dead after not being seen on the University of York campus for more than two months where he lived since 2019.

The donut was made as, “little tribute,” to Long Boi whilst also, “spreading the message,” to those who did not know about the passing. The donut consists of vanilla flavour with RIP spelled in icing and an edible paper Long Boi on the left.

The Universities Student Union launched a fundraiser which has so far raised over £4,000 with the goal of £10,000. The fundraiser aims to put up a bronze, life-size statue in memory of the iconic and beloved Long Boi.

£2,000 would have funded a memorial bench with a plaque. With that cost being blown out of the water, the statue is now the main goal with any excess money going to charities within the university. Flowers and candles have been laid on benches in the University ground where Long Boi used to be seen, whilst the Bakehouse is using their skills to create its own memorial for the iconic duck.
